The Andhra Pradesh Agricultural University (APAU) was established on June 12, 1964 at Hyderabad.
The University was formally inaugurated on March20, 1965 by Late Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri, the then Hon'ble Prime Minister of India. Another significant milestone was the inauguration of the building programme of the University by Late Smt Indira Gandhi, the then Hon'ble Prime Minister of India on June 23, 1966.
The University was renamed as Acharya N. G. Ranga Agricultural University on November 7th 1996 in honour and memory of an outstanding Parliamentarian Acharya N.G. Ranga, who rendered remarkable selfless service for the cause of farmers and is regarded as an outstanding educationist, kisan leader and freedom fighter. Institutional Autonomy - Inclusion of Agriculture, Veterinary/ Animal Husbandry and Home Science, Integration of Teaching, Research and Extension.
A life size bronze statue of Acharya N.G. Ranga was unveiled by His Excellency Dr. C. Ranagarajan, the Governor of Andhra Pradesh on 7th November, 1998 at the main campus of the University.

Mission & Vision
Institution’s Mission and Goals
In tune with the mandate of the university which "among others shall be to make provision for education mainly of the rural people of the state of Andhra Pradesh in agriculture in its broad sense and to promote research, field and extension programmes in agriculture and agricultural production", the university has set for itself the following goals.
Provide opportunities for the citizens of the state and the country for education in the field of agriculture in its broad sense and to promote research, field and extension programmes in agriculture and allied sciences. Strengthen UG and PG teaching through periodic revision of syllabi.
Establish the required infrastructure to conduct location specific research in the field of agriculture and allied sciences.
Generate technologies to improve farm production and income to farmers.
Provide the needed assistance to the development departments of the Government and other agencies to test and disseminate the improved technologies developed.
Provide opportunities for rural youth and women for learning and adoption of improved agro-technologies.
Revitalize the extension activities through the creation of specific infrastructure in each district.
Adopt advancements in information technology and computers to improve the formal academic programmes and introduce non-formal distance and contact learning programmes for the benefit of farmers, rural youth and women.
Admission
Under Graduate Programme
The University offers various U.G. degree courses in the faculties of Agriculture, Veterinary Science and Home Science at its constituent colleges in A.P.state, the main campus being Rajendranagar, Hyderabad. The medium of instruction for all the U.G Courses is ENGLISH.
Criteria for admission
The students are admitted into all U.G. courses except B. H. Sc. (Home Science) based on their performance in the state level Common Entrance Test (EAMCET) conducted by Department of Higher Education, Government of Andhra Pradesh. In the case of selection of candidates for B.V.Sc. & A.H. course a candidate must have obtained not less than 50% marks in Biology, Physics and Chemistry taken together (40% in the case of SC & ST candidates) in the EAMCET. In case of B. H. Sc. (Home Science) only women candidates are eligible for admission with a pass in two year Intermediate Examination with Bi. P. C or M. P. C. After the results of the entrance Test are notified by the authorities, the University shall invite applications from eligible candidates through Notification in some of the leading News paper like Eenadu, Vaartha, The Hindu and Siasat etc.
Age
The candidates for admission to First Year Under-Graduate courses in the University shall be required to have completed 17 years of age as on 31st December of the year of admission with an upper age limit of 22 years for all the candidates and 25 years in case of SC and ST candidates.
The eligible candidates shall be required to attend personal counselling as per the intimation/notification in the News Papers and be admitted to different U.G. Programmers depending on their individual merit as determined by the 'rank' obtained in EAMCET following the presidential order (Regional allotment), the rule of reservation as per orders of the Government of Andhra Pradesh.
Reservation weightage for different categories
a) Backward Classes = 25% (A=7%, B=10%, C=1%, D=7%).
b) Scheduled Castes = 15%
c) Scheduled Tribes = 6%
d) For women = 33.3%
e)Physically Handicapped candidates = 3% ( 1% each under Visually, Hearing and Orthopaedically impaired categories)
f) Children of Ex-Servicemen and Defence Personnel = 02%
g) N.C.C. = 01%
h) Games and Sports = 0.5%
Other Reservations:
25% of the seats in B. Sc. (Ag.), B. Sc. (Hort.), B. V. Sc. & A. H., B. F. Sc., B. Tech. (Ag. Engg.), B. Tech. (Dairying), B. Sc. (CA & BM) and B. Tech. (Food Science) courses are reserved for candidates coming from families of Agriculturists actually engaged in and owning not less than 3 acres of land and who have studied for a minimum of 4 years in Schools located in Non-Municipal areas. Candidates seeking admission under this category should produce a certificate in Form 3 of application containing patta numbers and extent of land obtained from a Revenue Officer not below the rank of Mandal Revenue Officer of the Mandal Concerned or a certified copy of Pattadar Pass Book issued by the Mandal Revenue Officer and also a Certificate in Form 4 of Application from the Heads of Institutions that the candidate has studied for a minimum period of four years in Schools located in Non-Municipal areas during their period of study from 1st class to 12th class Intermediate.
If the certificates as prescribed referred to under clause (a) above are not filled in proforma in the application form duly signed by the concerned Head of Institution or officer mentioned above along with office seal, the claim of the candidates under this category will be rejected.
PG
Candidates belonging to Andhra Pradesh are admitted to Master's degree programmes based on their performance in an Entrance Examination conducted separately for Agriculture, Horticulture and Home Science and their previous academic record. Based on their performance in the entrance examination, candidates are allotted to different disciplines within a faculty. PG students belonging to Andhra Pradesh are also eligible to earn a stipend of Rs.2,500/- p.m. for M.Sc. (10 months in a year) & Rs.3,500/- p.m. for Ph.D (upto 25 months) provided by the Govt. of A.P.
Twenty five percent (25%) of the seats in Masters degree courses are reserved for candidates belonging to other states. The selection of these candidates is based on the All India Entrance Examination conducted by the Indian Council of Agriculture Research (ICAR), New Delhi, Notification may be issued around March and examination conducted in May - June every year.
Post Gradate courses leading to Masters degree are offered in 12 disciplines in Agriculture, 2 in Horticulture and 5 in Home Science. Doctoral degree programmes are available in 10 disciplines in Agriculture and 5 disciplines in Home Science. In addition, inter-faculty Master degree programmes are being offered in Agri. Business Management, Food Science and Technology, Agril. Biotechnology and Environmental Science and Technology.
Consequent to the establishment of Sri Venkateswara Veterinary University at Tirupati in 2005 the teaching, research and extension programmes pertaining to Veterinary Science, Dairying and Fishery Science have been transferred to the new University.
In future Horticultural programmes will be transferred to the new Horticultural University.
