Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya, BCKV, came into being in West Bengal in 1974. The huge sylvine campus having its teaching, administrative, extension and research units now at Mohanpur, Nadia, WB., has got the district mandates for offering agricultural education both at UG and PG levels, conducting agricultural research as well as organizing extension programmes.
With a backdrop of different agro-climatic zones of West Bengal, comprising mainly of small farmers and farm entrepreneurs, it has already accomplished a glorious acumen through a relentless upgradation and diversification to emerge as a centre of excellence at the national level. The faculties of the university are Agriculture, Horticulture and Agricultural Engineering and relentlessly providing modern and high value education to create technocrats and scientist of capability to go competitive both at national and international levels.
The Viswavidyalaya performed its functions through three Faculties viz., Agriculture, Horticulture and Agricultural Engineering in regard to the studies at Under-Graduate, Post-Graduate and Doctoral levels. Besides the Directorate of Research with three Regional Research Stations and three Sub-Stations and the All India Co¬ordinated Research Projects (AICRPs), two large State Research Projects, one Govt. of India Project, a good number of National Agricultural Technology Projects (NATPs) and Ad-hoc Projects have conducted researches in priority areas for the State and specifically for the regions. The Directorate of Extension Education of the University has conducted number of trainings and demonstration through some of its continuing projects in those concerned regions for successful transfer of technology to the users.

Placement
A fully equipped and proficient placement centre is being housed in the campus for the convenience of our out going students. The Dean, Post Graduate Studies heads the placement cell with excellent contacts in the Industry & trade. This round the year placement activity involves students in interactive counseling sessions with the members of the placement cell to ensure their gainful Placement in the jobs before they leave the portals of the University.
The objective of the placement cell are
(i) To seek short duration training for our students
(ii) To identify industrial problem from industries & other corporate sectors suitable for students’ project work.
(iii) To help students for placemen after graduation & post graduation.
(iv) To publish a bulletin every year containing blo-data & details of students successfully completing their degree.
University produces a good number of talent technocrat, to work in the different pools challenging the demands. The placement cell has made remarkable tie-up with important national organizations to assist young technocrats to get suitable placement. Every year campus interview was conducted by various organizations like Fitro Lay, Indofil, Godrej Agrovet, Hind Lever, Syngenta India limited, Coromondal Fertilizers, Agronovo, Pradhan, Needs, State Bank of India, NABARD & several seed producing companies to name a few.
The placement cell explores the opportunity for placing all its students in regarding careers in reputed corporates, industries, Govt. and financial institutions.
This apart, for those from farming back ground & having family business or aptitude to set up their own industry special orientation programmes are being planted to bring about modem concepts to fulfill their dream in to reality.
State of art training and conference with the Extension Directorate with LCD projectors, audio systems, air-conditioned seminar hall & video conference centre, with fooding and lodging arrangements are available all under one roof.
Admission
ADMISSION PROCEDURE AND RELATED INFORMATION:
Notification for admission into undergraduate courses i.e. B.Sc. (Ag.) Hons. and B.Sc. (Hort.) Hons. is made in Newspapers, normally, in the second week of June every year. Out of total seats available for these courses, 85% of them are filled up on the basis of “marks” obtained in the Higher Secondary (10+2) level examination. The rest 15% is filled up through All India Joint Admission Test conducted by the ICAR, New Delhi. Candidates who have passed Higher Secondary (HS) or equivalent examination in General Science stream with Physics, Chemistry and Biology or in Vocational stream with Physics, Chemistry and Biological Science as elective subject and Crop Cultivation or Horticulture & Preservation of fruits as area of study. However, candidates must have to secure at least 60% marks in aggregate in HS or equivalent examination which is relaxable up to 55% marks in case of Schedule Caste (SC) and those having Proficiency in Sports and Games, and up to 50% marks in case of Schedule Tribe (ST) candidates. The minimum age for admission is 17 years as on 1st June of the year of admission. Admission to the 1st year B.Tech. (Ag. Engg.) Hons. Course under Faculty of Engineering is made through Joint Entrance Examination of West Bengal.
The last date for submission of Application form is usually 15th day from the date of declaration of HS results under West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Examination (WBCHSE).
Master degree programmes are offered in 15 academic departments out of 17 numbers, and require a student to complete 40 credit hour course work, 2 seminars and project work (noncredit). The programme requires 4 semesters each of 6 months duration at the minimum. Evaluation includes four short tests (40%) and one End term (60%) in theories, and continuous evaluation in practicals. Results are given in 10.0 point scale in numerical grade. For project work a dissertation is submitted by the student to be examined by external examiners. There are written and oral Comprehensive examinations also.
Doctoral Degree programmes are offered in all the 17 academic departments. Doctoral degree programmes are research work based programme with a minimum of 12 credit hour course work and 3 seminars. Minimum eligibility is masters degree in the subject or in cognate branch of science. Students having no basic degree in agriculture requires to undergo 15 credit hours additional course work in basic agriculture. Limited number of scholarship are available for doctoral students in additional to Research Fellowships available through ad-hoc research projects in Departments funded by outside agencies like ICAR, ARC, CSRI, UGC, Govt. of India and others.
