The Academic Staff College, Burdwan University was established in the year 1989 to cater the vital need for improving the status of the teacher as well as to inculcate dynamism in higher education system by providing opportunities for professional and career advancement as proposed in the National Policy on Education, 1986 (NPE). The main objectives of the ASC are to enable the newly appointed teacher to understand the signaficance of education in linkage between education and economic and socio-cultural development and thirdly to acquire and improve basic skills of teaching keeping abrest with the development in subject
The Execute Council of Burdwan University resolved on September 15, 1998 to set up an Engineering Institute at the University Campus under the direct control of the University of Burdwan - named University Institute of Technology (UIT). On September 16, 1999 Burdwan University Court approved the resolution. As per provisions of the Burdwan University Act under Section 2 Sub-sections 16 and 17 the institute enjoys the status of a Professional College run and managed by the University. Sri Buddhadeb Bhattacharyya, Honorable Chief Minister, Government of West Bengal inagurated the UIT building on September 04, 2001. With the approval of Government of West Bengal and All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), three graduate engineering courses, viz., Computer Science & Engineering, Electronics & Communication Engineering and Information Technology were introduced from the session 2000-2001. From the year 2003 a new branch 'Applied Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering' has been started.
