Jain Vishva Bharati Institute was established in 1991 with inspiration from His Holiness Acharya Tulsi, a seer, saint and scholar. His Holiness was the ninth Acharya, the Supreme Head of the Jain Terapanth religious sect. He was the first Anushasta (Preceptor) of the Institute and Acharya Shri Mahaprajna his successor, is the present one. (The Anushasta is a statutory post of the Institute, empowered to discipline the Institute spiritually and morally.) Acharya Tulsi and now Acharya Mahaprajna work untiringly towards eradicating social evils, reforming social customs, building national character and educating the masses on the principles of nonviolence, universal peace and brotherhood.

The Jain Vishva Bharati Institute was accorded with the status of a "Deemed to be University" by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under Section 3 of the U.G.C. Act of 1956, in 1991 on the recommendation of the Government of India.
As per notification of University Grants Commission No. F.6-1(II)/2006 (CPP-I) dated 13.09.2006, the name of the Jain Vishva Bharati Institute has been changed as Jain Vishva Bharati University.

Mission & Vision
Mission, Motto and Goal

Lord Mahavira said 2600 years ago ‘Nanassa Saram Ayaro' i.e. "Right conduct is the essence of knowledge." This spiritual voice is the motto of the Institute. Every programme and every activity is directed towards the realisation of this motto. The goal of JVBI has been clearly spelt out in the preamble of JVBI's constitution which reads:
"The Jain Vishva Bharati Institute is an endeavour in the direction of putting into practice and to promote and propagate the high ideals of Anekanta (non-absolutist outlook), Ahimsa (Non-violence), Tolerance and Peaceful Co-existence for the weal of mankind"

"We the members of Jain Vishva Bharati, therefore, resolve to constitute and establish the said Institute of Advanced Studies, Research and Training in Jainology in the context of comparative studies in Jainology, World Religions, Ahimsa (Non-violence) and World Peace."

This institution, combines theoretical research with practical research, in other words, it combines gyan (knowledge) and dhyan (meditation). The University is however free from any religious affiliations. It draws its spiritual strength and direction from Acharya Mahaprajna, who is above any sectarian bias.
