7th July 1981, the auspicious Hera Panchami,stands as a red-letter-day in the history of higher education ,not only in the state of Orissa but also in the country as a whole.On that day in the quite and solemn morning hours, 9 O'clock to be precise ,Shri Jagannath Sanskrit Vishvavidyalaya took its birth amidst chanting of Vedic hymns,observance of scriptural rites.ringing of bells,and blowing of conchshells.It was the third university of its kind in the country and fifth in the state.

The birth of this Vishvavidyalaya helped revive the glorious ancient tradition of Orissa in the field of Sanskrit language,literature,and Sanskrit-based heritage learning.Right from inception this Vishvavidyalaya has dedicated itself to the cause of preserving and promoting studies and research in Sanskrit.

More than two decades have passed by in between. During these years developments have taken place in many fields. The Vishvavidyalaya has been shifted from a small room in Puri Raj Bhawan to its present spacious Eco-friendly campus.The majestic Central Library,the Prayer Hall,the Administrative building,Faculty Building,Hostels and Staff Quarters have come up.the Academic Arena has registered a spectacular growth.Besides the Post-graduate Teaching Departments and the Research center ,located in the campus at Shri Vihar,the number of undergraduate colleges, established at different places throughout the length and breadth of Orissa has crossed two hundred.In addition to the financial and administrative support of the State Govt.,the Vishvavidyalaya has been included under the Sec.2 (f) and 12(b) of the U.G.C. Act,thereby, enabling it to receive the U.G.C.recognition and grant.Still there are miles to go and much more to be achieved.The Vishvavidyalaya gratefully acknowledges the contribution of all concerned,without which it would not have seen the light of the day and progressed so far,and hopes to get support from all quarters to march ahead.

Shri Jagannath Sanskrit Vishvavidyalaya, the third Sanskrit university in India was established on 7.7.1981 at Puri by the state government of Orissa. Eighteen years in the life of a University is quite an important period , during which it struggled hard to emerge as a unique institution in its sphere.But this period is not long enough by any reckoning to allow it to achieve all that it can look forward to achieving .Still this Vishvavidyalaya,has made very significant contributions to the world of knowledge and in the building up of skills,having been located in a natural setting of the scenic beauty,being ideally built for serious study and research in the field of the most ancient language (Sanskrit) Science and Culture of the world.Its majestic edifice of Library symbolizes the leadership and commitment to seek through the highest truth,to upset the old dogmas in the society by means of valid knowledge ,to be the torch bearer to lead its youth on right path to achieve almost all humanistic goals.
