National Institute of Technology Jalandhar was established in the year 1987 as Regional Engineering College and was given the status of National Institute of Technology by the Government of India under the control of Ministry of Human Resource Development, New Delhi on October 17, 2002.
As National Institute of Technology, the institute has a responsibility of providing high quality education in Engineering and Technology to produce competent technical manpower for the country. The institute offers B Tech program in nine disciplines of Engineering and Technology along with research programs leading to M.Sc, M Tech and Ph D. The institute acquires a national character having 50% student intake from the State of Punjab and the rest from other states/union territories of the country.
NIT Jalandhar is an autonomous institution under the aegis of the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Govt. of India, New Delhi. The institution functions under the over all control and guidance of the Board of Governers, the Director being the executive head of the institute. Besides the Board of Governers, the other authorities of the institute are the Senate, the Finance Committee and the Building and Works Committee.

Placement
Centre of Training and Placement (CTP) of National Institute of Technology (erstwhile Regional Engineering College), Jalandhar started functioning in the year 1990.
The Centre is involved in three specific areas:-
-Placement of outgoing Graduates
-Industrial Practical Training of students during the four-year B.Tech. Programme.
-Industry Institute Partnership activities
The overall annual placement level achieved during the last few years has been 60% to 90% ( for some disciplines, it being 100%).
During the last few years, three projects have been sanctioned & completed by Ministry of Human Resource Development, Govt. of India, and All India Council of Technical Education.
The CTP has been instrumental in signing MOUs with Confederation of Indian Industry, AMDOCS Cyprus and Jayshree Textiles, Calcutta.
Accommodation
The hostels provides the students with an atmosphere much like a home away from home.It provides them with all the necessary facilities which helps them to acclimatize well with this new ambience. Every hostel has its own mess which is managed and run by the students themselves. Keeping in mind the different tastes of the students, the mess caters them with healthly and tasty food.
In all National Institute of Technology, Jalandhar has six boys hostels and two girls hostels to accomodate the assests of the institute in the most comfortable and conducive manner.

Accommodation: At present the hostels have a capacity to accommodate 1050 boys and 252 girl students. The residential accommodation in hostels comprises of cubicles and dormitories (3 seater).
Hostels Rules: Every boarder is provided with a chair, a table and a cot. He will be responsible for these items and other electrical fittings etc. Furniture and electrical fittings are not to be removed from one room to another. Every boarder is to see that no damage is done to the hostel property. Fitting & repair charges for any damage (intentional or negligence) are to be borne by the boarder concerned.
Admission
The admission to undergraduate programmes at the institute for the session 2008-09 will be made on the basis of the merit of AIEEE-2008 conducted by CBSE through the Central Counselling Board Constituted by MHRD, Government of India. The reservation policy will be as per the decision of the MHRD. The eligibility for admission under the home state quota is 10+2 pass in the discipline approved by AICTE from an institution located in Punjab.
