Chaudhary Devi Lal University, named after Jan Nayak (late) Chaudhary Devi Lal, the former Deputy Prime Minister of India, who belonged to this region of Haryana state. The University was established by the Government of Haryana by an Act of Legislature in the year 2003 (Act No.9/2003) and was inaugurated on April 5, 2003. The University, located at Sirsa at a distance of 256 kms from Delhi and 285 from Chandigarh, has a sprawling campus of 348 acres on the Barnala Road. The National Highway No. 10 and the Delhi-Rewari-Bathinda Railway Line pass through Sirsa. The squadron head quarter of Indian Air Force with an airport is also in the vicinity of Sirsa city. Though Sirsa is situated in Haryana, it adjoins both Punjab and Rajasthan. The University has great potential for developing into a Centre of Academic Excellence to cater the students belonging to Haryana and other states of the country.
The University has been successfully running 16 Academic Departments, which offer 21 Career oriented and specialized courses to the students. These courses are: M.Tech. (Computer Science & Engineering), MCA, M.Sc. (Biotechnology, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Food Science & Technology, Energy & Environmental Sciences), MBA, M.Com., B.Ed., M.P.Ed., D.P.Ed., C.P.Ed., M.A.(English, Economics, Public Administration, Journalism & Mass Communication), LL.B. Renowned and experienced academicians of the country have been involved in designing the course curriculum of these subjects. Special care is taken to follow the UGC and AICTE guidelines and the National Standards in preparing and imparting the course through highly qualified faculty members of the University.
The University has already employed permanent faculty who are distinguished scholars in their respective disciplines. Besides teaching, they are contributing quality research papers in National and International Research Journals. The University will employ need based faculty keeping in view the increasing number of students in various departments.
As an unambiguous sign of growth and development, more infrastructure facilities have been added to the existing facilities in the University. His Excellency, Dr. A.R. Kidwai the Governor of Haryana and Chancellor of the University has recently inaugurated a girls’ hostel named after Kalpana Chawla, a renowned scientist of NASA in the University campus. In addition, an extension block of Tagore Bhawan has also recently been inaugurated. Many other infrastructure facilities are near completion.
We feel proud of the fact that during the session 2005-06 our University organized a number of National Level Seminars and National Workshops. The scholars and teachers of national and international repute participated and presented their research papers. It was intellectually exciting experience for our students. The University is committed to pursue such academic and intellectual explorations and innovations with invigorated vigor and force so that it becomes and centre of academic excellence in the year to come.
