PDPM IIITDM Jabalpur is a residential Institute set up by Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India. The Institute offers interdisciplinary teaching and research programmes that integrate engineering design and manufacturing with information technology. The Institute is being nurtured and developed with the cooperation of Japan. Japan Government has formed a consortium of six Japanese universities and industries to give academic support to the Institute.
Probably at no previous moment in the world history have commerce and industry become so complex, extensive, and globally interrelated as they are today. India, which is going through a rapid growth in its manufacturing sector, is not unaffected by these changes. The modern manufacturing environment entails a large variety of cross-disciplinary activities including the Design and IT. Engineers consequently are being called upon to work within new environmental, economical and social constraints which are increasingly becoming a part of contemporary engineering practice. Obviously, these elements need to find their way into the engineering curricula. However, traditional engineering instructional formats isolate teaching and research into specific disciplines with un-integrated curricula and therefore the structure of our engineering curricula have hardly changed in accordance with the modern manufacturing needs. Such divisions in the existing higher education formats are found to act as barriers to learning, behavior, and performance.
Another aspect of engineering education which needs to be considered is the basic nature of the IT profession. The IT driven market of today features a model of innovation which is quite different from the research models that most institutes are familiar with. The new market model for innovation emphasizes on fast concept, funds projects with venture capital, fosters innovation by rewarding entrepreneurs who specialize in transforming people's practices to become more productive with the help of new technology. In contrast, the conventional research model emphasizes on careful development of ideas and principles and achieves innovation only after ideas have gone through a long pipeline that distills out the best and brings them into practice over a period of 15-20 years. This dichotomy between the new market-driven model and the conventional idea-pipeline model poses another great challenge to educators of engineering.
The current engineering education system in India, though huge and diverse, is mainly based on the conventional idea of pipeline model. To integrate the knowledge of a given discipline with IT enabled design, prototyping as well as manufacturing considerations, a need therefore exists for developing a new academic programmes. Apart from laying an emphasis on IT, the new approach should also give emphasis on aesthetic, ergonomic and functional considerations of products. The academic programme should also be able to respond to industry driven adaptive management structure.
With above requirements in mind, the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India, felt the need to set up a national institute devoted exclusively for Information Technology (IT), Design & Manufacturing (D & M). It was envisaged that such an academic institute would promote excellence in the desired areas of specialization and would facilitate and promote the competitive advantage of Indian products and manufacturing in global markets. Further, the new Institute would serve as an inter-disciplinary institution for education and research by keeping the concept of Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) in mind. The India Institute of Information Technology, Design & Manufacturing (IIITDM) Jabalpur was thus established in January 2005. Strong industry interface and close cooperation with other academic and research institutions are the key features of this Institute. These details are retrieved from www.iiitdm.in
Mission & Vision
Vision
The Indian Institute of Information Technology, Design and Manufacturing (IIITDM) Jabalpur shall be a Global Center of Excellence in engineering education and research by building itself as an Enterprise of Knowledge wherein the academic community including students, shaped with the unique creativity based on fundamental strong multidisciplinary academic skills, the capacity for a bold innovative thinking involving positive change and an integrity of character, grounded in an active and resolutely pioneering spirit, shall be indulged in meaningful innovations based on a knowledge-based engineering approach.
Mission
The Mission of the Institute is to create a multidisciplinary academic environment to prepare and train manpower of excellence for nurturing and promoting knowledge-based activities and innovations in design, fabrication and manufacturing of products by bringing together a collaborative and mutually stimulating mix of different fields of science, engineering and arts. In doing so the Institute shall identify current and future agendas for scholarship, share knowledge and discoveries with the world community and actively cultivate individuals with the desire and capability to contribute to society.
Placement
The Placement Cell is the nodal point of contact for companies to interact with the Institute. It comprises of members of faculty and students, ably assisted by staff, engaged in the placement of graduating students and the internship of B.Tech 2nd and 3rd year students. Its effort is to provide a platform to facilitate interaction between students and companies so that both can find the best match according to their aspirations and requirements. The Institute focuses on latest technologies for effective delivery. The curriculum emphasizes on a cross-disciplinary approach with a strong inclination towards hands-on training and project work with an objective of synthesizing engineering with basic sciences, humanities and management for fulfilling the need of the better trained man power for the Indian and global industries & R&D organization. The Cell also put enough emphasis on the all round personality development of students. The Office is well equipped and is designed to smoothly handle and support the placement process at all stages. Infrastructure for pre-placement talks, written tests, group discussions and personal interviews are available.
Summer internship, though not a part of the curriculum, is strongly encouraged. Students are very much welcomed by high profile companies for internship, including Japanese companies. With the full support of Japanese Government, industries and universities, every year selected students visit Japan during summer and winter breaks for internship and industrial tour. In the summers of 2008-09, 12 students have gone for internship to Japanese industries. The Cell is in regular touch with companies for the placement of graduating batch. Placement is going on through campus visit and telephonic interactions with the students.
Selection Process:
The Institute, though, starts interacting with companies at the beginning of odd semester but it begins the formal placement process at the end of odd semester (December). The Institute approaches companies with necessary information and formal invitation. The company provides necessary data/profile. Essential details of students are provided to the company. A mutually convenient date and time is fixed for Pre-Placement Talk (PPT) & Written Test/ Final Interview. The Institute has well furnished Conference Room. The PPT is arranged in the Conference Room/Lecture Hall Complex, as the case may be, depending on the students’ strength. The visit of the company is announced to the students along with profile of the company. Interested and eligible students register with the Placement Cell. If needed, the Cell facilitates telephonic interaction between students’ and company. Normally, the company re-confirms the visit prior to the mutually allocated visit date. The Institute provides with the accommodation in its Visitor’s Hostel (VH) and other local hospitality. The VH is equipped with connectivity/ conferencing facilities. The selection list is announced as soon as company finalizes the same. The Cell is responsible for the negotiations with the companies, sending acceptance of students to the companies, etc.
