C.N.Annadurai, affectionately called Peraringar Anna, the former Chief Minister of Tamilnadu during 1967-1968, was an erudite scholar, an astute politician, a wise statesman, powerful orator, revolutionary writer, fine novelist, noted playwright, great social reformer, an ardent rationalist, a staunch socialist, a great diplomat, a true democrat, an eminent leader and, above all, an affectionate elder brother (Anna) to his people. It was Anna who named the Madras State Tamil Nadu. In 1962, Annadurai launched his own party Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam to work for the social justice and rapidly gained popular support. Anna was not born with a silver spoon in his mouth; instead, he was born with a silver tongue. It is a matter of pride and pleasure of record that the Yale University in the U.S.A. honoured Anna by conferring on him the Chubb Fellowship. Anna was the first non-American to have received that honour. Not alone his life, but his death too proclaimed his greatness. His funeral was attended by 15 million ardent followers which set the Guinness record for The longest funeral. Named after the great veteran, Anna University Coimbatore was established by the st Government of Tamil Nadu under the Act No.42 of 2006 on 1 February 2007 from the parent Anna University at Chennai.
Anna University was established as an Unitary type of University at Chennai (formerly, Madras) in the year 1978 with four constituent institutions viz., College of Engineering, Guindy, Alagappa College of Technology, Guindy, School of Architecture and Planning, Guindy and Madras Institute of Technology, Chrompet. In the year 2002, Anna University was converted into an affiliated type of University wherein all the Government, Government aided and Self-financing Engineering Colleges in the state of Tamil Nadu numbering around 102 are affiliated to it.
Since the number of institutions in the state was continuously rising every year and 240 during 2006, for administrative convenience, Anna University was divided into four separate Universities namely,
* Anna University Chennai
* Anna University Coimbatore
* Anna University Trichirapalli and
* Anna University Tirunelveli.
Anna University Coimbatore is an affiliating type of university by an act of section of 54 of the Anna University, Coimbatore act, 2006. (Tamilnadu Act No. 42 of 2006). The Government of Tamilnadu established the Anna University Coimbatore on 01-02-2007. Anna university Coimbatore has 3 government Engineering colleges, 2 Govt aided engineering colleges and 98 self financing engineering colleges and 15 stand alone institutions under its fold. About 80000 aspiring engineering graduates study in these institutions. 80% of the Students come from rural Background. It offers higher education in Engineering, Technology, Management and allied Sciences relevant to the current and projected needs of the society.
