The Thiruvalluvar University was established under the Thiruvalluvar University Act, 2002 (Tamil Nadu Act 32 of 2002) by the Government of Tamil Nadu on 16.10.2002. The then Post Graduation Extension Centre, University of Madras, functioning at the Fort Campus, Vellore - 632 004 was extended as a University.

The University is striving to achieve the objectives through the vision of liberating knowledge having the mission of empowering through higher education to achieve the goals of:

The University Emblem symbolizes the great poet, Thiruvalluvar, a Lotus, a Lamp and an Elephant. Thiruvalluvar is a great sage of Tamil Nadu after whom the University has been named.
The lotus, the flower of India with its myriad petals stands for integration.
The lamp represents Enlightenment.
The elephant is meant for strength.
The background colour of green indicates prosperity.
All the qualities described above are inculcated in the minds of the students who enter the portals of this University through education and enlightenment.
