The Harkisan Mehta Foundation Institute of Journalism was established in 1990. It has been named after eminent Gujarati novelist, writer and journalist, Harkisan Mehta. Mehta was the editor of Chitralekha and the magazine grew during his editorship. The Harkisan Mehta Foundation Institute of Journalism, run by the Shri Vile Parle Kelavani Mandal, has established itself in the field of journalism, by giving quality media education. The SVKM has 23 educational institutions, with over 33, 000 students on role in the academic year 2003-2004.

Taking into account various aspects of mass media and the growing demand in the industry for quality personnel in different fields of mass media, the HMFIJ imparts courses in advertising, public relations and photography as well as advance courses in journalism. During the academic year 2004-05 the Institute proposes to introduce courses in Broadcast Journalism and Digital Film Making.

Aims and Objectives
The Harkisan Mehta Foundation Institute of Journalism aspires to give the best training in journalism, advertising, public relations and photography. The aims and objectives of the various courses being offered by the Institute are:
· To equip the students with the latest knowledge, pertaining to the disciplines chosen by them, by getting professionals to interact with them;
· To impart adequate professional training and skills, to enable them to take up careers in their chosen disciplines;
· To enable students of journalism, as well as working journalists to enhance their knowledge and skills, by offering them specialised courses;
· To enable students of advertising and public relations courses to equip themselves to join any organisation as professionals, as well as to train them to be on their own as professionals;
· To inculcate the habit of reading, among students of the Institute;
· To train students to carry out research; and
· To help students develop their personality. No wonder our students have made a mark in the media over the years.
