Common Admission Test (CAT) is an all-India test conducted by the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs), considered to be the most prestigious B-schools of India. It is an entrance exam for students who want to pursue Post Graduate level Management Degree from world renowned IIM's. Performance in Common Admission Test or CAT, followed by Group Discussions and Personal Interviews, serves as the basis for admission. Apart from the IIM's, a candidate can take admission in many other business schools with a CAT score.

About Online CAT Exam 2010

Ending a three decade old paper-pencil format for the Common Admissions Test (CAT), the Indian Institutes of Management (IIM) have decided to adopt a computer based model for CAT 2010. From now on, applicants will select a test date from a period of ten days towards the end of this calendar year."The CAT will be conducted at Prometric centers across the country. The locations of these centers will be determined only after all CAT applications have been received. Students will get some idea about how to prepare for this year's test when the CAT exam advertisements and booklets are released."

The primary reason behind this decision is the manifold increase in number of CAT applicants in recent years. Approximately 2.5 lakh candidates wrote the CAT exam in 2008 and this is an increase of 163 percent as compared to 2003 when about 95,000 students attempted this test. The IIMs have encountered difficulties in conducting the CAT in the past. In 2003, CAT question papers had been leaked and this resulted in a retest being held later that year.

The IIMs believe that a computer based CAT will result in flexibility in choice of selection date, ease of registration process, better physical environment and test experience. There will also be enhanced security in terms of biometric identification of candidates and video monitoring. Such a format is expected to improve communication between candidates and IIMs in terms of programme information, test delivery, receipt of admit cards, and receipt of score reports

The candidate must have a bachelor's degree with a minimum of 50% marks. In case of the SC and ST, a minimum of 45% mark is sufficient.

Examination Pattern

Common Admission Test (CAT) is multiple-choice based entrance exam, with negative marking for wrong answers. It comprises of three sections, which span the domains of arithmetical problem solving, geometry, statistics, data interpretation, logical reasoning, puzzles, and English language skills. Every year, changes are also made in the total number of questions and the time duration of CAT.

There is no set or defined syllabus for the CAT exam. It is designed to assess the natural ability of a person towards their preferred field. Hence, it is designed to test the inclination of the applicant towards managerial tasks and roles. Mainly, the questions are asked from Quantitative Aptitude, Reading Comprehension & Verbal Ability, and Data Interpretation & Data Sufficiency.
