What is SAT exam?

The SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test)test is used to evaluate a candidate’s critical thinking and problem solving skills which would help to measure their overall ability and potential to undertake the bachelor level study program.

SAT is a compulsory test to secure admission in any undergraduate program of any college of USA. This test is developed, managed and administered by College Entrance Examination Board, based in USA. SAT is prepared and scored by the Educational Testing Service. It is an approximately 4 hour long test. There are two types of SAT tests namely, SAT Reasoning Test and SAT Subject Tests.

Indian students who wish to study abroad have traditionally taken the SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test), but over the last few years, as a result of awareness, more and more Indian students are taking the ACT (American College Test) as ACT is also widely accept across schools in the US.

While both these tests are accepted one must not assume that in format they are similar.  The fact is both these tests are very different and they are designed to measure varied skills. However, both of them fulfill the same role in the admission process.  Thus, depending on a student’s strengths and weaknesses, he or she may perform better in one test over the other.

Some argue that the SAT is better as the SAT features independent subsections, i.e. each section of the SAT is valid as an individual measure of critical reading, mathematics, writing skills which give a clear idea about a student’s specific abilities in specific areas.

SAT questions are pre-screened and are fair to all students regardless of gender, race, and ethnicity, country of origin or socio-economic status.

SAT provides more time for completion and therefore more time per question.  It is designed to test student’s knowledge and skills beyond what they have studied as this essentially means the student has a wider spectrum of knowledge which is essential to study in a university away from home.
