Faculty of
Humanities at the University of Southampton (UK) invites applications for its
courses in Film Studies



The University of Southampton’s Faculty of Humanities
is inviting applications for its Film Studies undergraduate and postgraduate
degree courses for September 2013 entry. The programme aims to teach students
the latest developments in Film by world-class researchers and eminent
published experts, in areas ranging from early film to contemporary Hollywood
blockbusters.



Commenting on the programme, Prof. Tim Bergfelder (Head
of Film Studies), said, “Film Studies has been taught in this University for
almost thirty years, and our programmes have been consistently assessed in
league tables as being among the best in the country in terms of the quality of
our teaching and research, and particularly in terms of student support.”



Film is offered as a
single honors degree and as a combined honors degree with English, History,
Philosophy or Modern Languages (French, German or Spanish)
. The
Faculty offers the following undergraduate programmes:

BA Film and
English (3 years)

BA Film and
French (4 years)



·        
BA Film and
German (4 years)



·        
BA Film and
History (3 years)

BA Film and
Philosophy (3 years)

BA Film and
Spanish (4 years)

BA Film Studies

The Faculty also offers the following postgraduate
programmes, which are accompanied by separate seminar series that features
eminent visiting speakers, including world-class academics and industry
professionals:



 



·        
MA in Film
Studies (1 year full time) –
this long-established course addresses a wide variety of
film cultures, from Hollywood to European and non-Western modes of film-making.
It gives a comprehensive education in the major theoretical approaches to the
subject; one of the most distinctive features of the programme is its emphasis
on transnational or global perspectives on cinema.



·        
MA in Film and Cultural Management (1 year full time) – This innovative
programme provides a deeper understanding of the film industry in the UK and globally and i
s designed for students who
wish to combine study of film at postgraduate level with a knowledge of
cultural management.



 



Film Studies
is an exciting and challenging subject that provides a critical understanding
of film as popular entertainment, theoretical discipline, industry and art
form. “Apart from the undergraduate and postgraduate programmes,
we also offer a 'PhD by
distance learning', and a four-year integrated PhD, which combines taught
elements in the first year with the more traditional PhD format in subsequent
years,” said Prof. Bergfelder.
