Biotechnology versus Bachelor of Engineering

Individuals who love to learn more about the human body and how it works may be interested in the field of biotechnology or the field of biotechnical engineering.  Although these career fields may sound similar, they are actually quite different in course studies, job prospects and what the student can expect to do after graduation.  Both career fields specialize in the body and how it functions, but the actual manipulation comes differently with both careers.

Those with a degree in biochemical engineering will focus their efforts more on the science of chemistry, and will be more focused on the chemistry inside living cells.  The field of biochemical engineering encompasses a wider range of tasks and may have more opportunities for graduates.

Biotechnology is a more specific field in science, and biotechnicians focus more on how to manipulate the chemicals inside of a living cell.  These individuals may work with genetic mutations and may perform tasks such as determining how to get yeast cells to grow human insulin.

Those who study bioengineering will focus their coursework around engineering concepts while those who are studying the field of biotechnology will be more focused on chemistry and biology principles.  Bioengineers may design medical devices or imaging technologies, and aren’t specific to chemicals.

Bioengineering is essentially taking engineering concepts and applying them to the human body.  These individuals work on both a commercial basis and may even have the opportunity to teach or do professional research.

Job prospects for bioengineers are more plentiful, and those with a degree in biotechnology may need a more advanced degree in order to get a higher paying job. - See more
