Prepare for Your Study Abroad Experience
Submitted by on 05/12/2013 - 04:43 PM
Once you’ve decided to attend college in another country, there are
several steps you must complete in order to be completely prepared for the
experience.  Students who are prepared
often know better what to except and have far fewer complications once the
travelling day arrives.  Travelling
internationally requires that you have the correct paperwork and enough money
to get by, and entering a strange country may be nerve-wracking if you are
unprepared.  The following tips can help
you be prepared for your study abroad
experience.

Check your Passport:

First, check your passport
and make sure you have the correct visa.
If you already have a passport, check to make sure it has not expired
since you traveled with it last.  The
visa requirements differ with each country, but you should always make sure you
have adequate amounts of time to fill out your paperwork and get the documents
you need to travel smoothly.  Depending
on the country, it can take anywhere from one week to a full year to get a
passport and visa, so it’s important to start early.

Get information regarding
the culture and country:

Along with your correct documents, you’ll also want some information regarding the culture and country you are
travelling to.  The Internet is a
valuable tool when you start to research your new home.  Take the time to research the country you’ll
be living in to help you avoid any awkward situations or uncomfortable
interactions.  You’ll feel more
comfortable in social situations and make friends faster if you understand more
about the culture you are visiting.

Pack Light:

Once you’re ready to start packing, it’s important that you remember
to pack light!  Traveling around the world is exhausting when
you are carrying several suitcases and pieces of luggage.  Determine how much money you need and pack
the most essential items several days before your scheduled departure.  Although you are asked to pack light, don’t
forget to throw in a few items that remind you of home that will help you ward
off any homesickness you feel.
